MANILA, Philippines - Nearly 6,000 people were stranded in various ports around the country as tropical storm "Quinta" made landfall on Tuesday night, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported.
The NDRRMC said that a total of 5,916 people were stranded in ports in Central and Eastern Visayas, Metro Manila, Northern Mindanao and Bicol.
These included 2,550 in Manila, 2,407 in Cebu, 378 in Maasin (Leyte), 300 in Cagayan de Oro, 182 in Ozamiz, 50 in Catbalogan, and 49 in Sorsogon
The NDRRMC said that in anticipation of the storm, port operations in Roxas, Oriental Mindoro and Puerto Princesa, Palawan were suspended.
Also stranded were 69 rolling cargoes, 58 vehicles and 14 boats. At least two vessels took shelter.
Benito Ramos, chairman of the NDRRMC, said he had ordered ports closed in Visayas, many areas of which were placed under storm signals.
Ramos said they have so far received no reports of casualties from 'Quinta.'
