Puerto Princesa placed under state of emergency due to power woes

Manila, Philippines -  The Puerto Princesa City Council has approved a resolution placing the entire city under a state of emergency due to the worsening problem on power supply.

The resolution would allow Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn to come up with measures to address the problem.

Haydee Dizon, a staff member of Puerto Princesa Vice Mayor Lucilo Bayron, said the city council saw the need to immediately place the city under a state of emergency in reaction to the complaint of the residents and the business sector.

“We hope Mayor Hagedorn will sign the resolution by next week,” Dizon told The STAR.

Dizon, who resides in Barangay Sta. Monica, said there were times when residents experience blackouts for eight to 24 hours.

She said the influx of tourists could not be blamed for the power shortage since there was increased electricity use even in ordinary households.

Thousands of tourists have been visiting Puerto Princesa to see the Underground River, which was recently declared one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
