LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – Five people, including three minors and a teacher, were killed while eight other children aged 12 to 17 were injured when a passenger train bound for Ligao City in Albay rammed a tricycle in Iriga City, Camarines Sur yesterday morning, police said.
Superintendent Renato Bataller, spokesman of the Philippine National Police in Bicol, said three of the fatalities – Kimberly Doroteo, 13; Shiela Sapinoso, 32, a public school teacher; and John Ricard Rosal, 15 – were killed on the spot, while tricycle driver Danilo Doroteo, 51, and Kent Lester Doroteo, 12, died while being rushed to a hospital in Nabua town.
Injured were Mikee Villanueva, 15; Hanny Mae Baal, 12; Ronnil Rodillas, 13; Loren Legada, 12; Jessa Bareno, 17; Joshua Salamaneque, 14; Hanson Baal, 15; and Angelo Zollo, 15.
Bataller said the train operator, Froilan Ollero, is now detained at the Iriga police station while cases of multiple homicide and multiple physical injuries are being readied against him. – With Cet Dematera, Rainier Allan Ronda
