MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) seized 84 drums of diesel estimated to be worth P2 million that reportedly came from Malaysia and brought to Palawan province.
PCG-Palawan district commander Commodore Enrico Efren Evangelista yesterday said the smuggled diesel was brought to Barangay Marabahay in Rio Tuba Bataraza town on board M/L Victoria.
The discovery of 84 drums of diesel is considered “the biggest haul in recent years,” said Evangelista.
The PCG station at Brooke’s Point intercepted M/L Virginia as it was about to dock at the pier in Barangay Marabahay, Bataraza at around 9 p.m. last April 11. No arrests had been made because the vessel’s captain and crew immediately abandoned the boat upon seeing the Coast Guard personnel.
A certain Rolly Ami, who claims to be a resident of Balabac, appeared before the PCG and claimed ownership of M/L Virginia. He said a certain Lawrence Lakatan allegedly rented the vessel for five days to travel to Mangsee Island also, in Palawan. – Evelyn Macairan, Juancho Mahusay
