11 dead in diarrhea outbreak in Lanao

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – At least 11 people have been confirmed dead in the diarrhea outbreak since February in Salvador town in Lanao del Norte.

The Department of Health’s Northern Mindanao office said at least 50 diarrhea patients are still confined in different hospitals.

The DOH has already put in place a monitoring system that would check on those afflicted by the illness, traced to the presence of E. coli bacteria in the Salog River, where residents source their water.

Diarrhea has also left one villager dead and has downed 30 others, mostly children, on Polilio Island in Quezon province.

In a report, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said an increasing number of diarrhea cases have been reported in Puroks 2 and 5 of Barangay Tulaong on Polilio Island. – With Alexis Romero
