Bird flu watch tightened in 3 Isabela areas

- Charlie Lagasca -

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – At least three areas in Isabela where migratory birds are frequenting yearly are closely being watched to prevent the entry of the dreaded bird flu virus.

Isabela, the country’s third largest province, has three known favorite sanctuaries of migratory birds: the Magat Dam area in Ramon town, the Monterey farm in Cauayan City, and the Pacific coastal town of Palanan.

Dr. Angel Naui, provincial veterinary office chief, said they have been closely monitoring the entry of flocks of migratory birds into the province, which usually takes place during this time of the year.

Generally, migratory birds, usually coming from other Asian counties, migrate to tropical countries like the Philippines to escape the extreme cold weather in the northern hemisphere.

“Their entry must be closely monitored as these birds might be carriers of the bird flu virus that can afflict human beings,” Naui said.

The migratory birds, usually coming from China, Japan, Korea and Siberia, are feared to be carriers of other diseases aside from bird flu or avian influenza.

Gov. Faustino Dy III said they have tapped villagers to help the provincial government in monitoring the entry of these birds to further ensure the safety of Isabelinos from any bird flu pandemic.

Bird flu, also known as avian flu, is caused by viruses adapted to birds. Of several variants, the one called “highly pathogenic avian influenza” is of greatest concern to health authorities worldwide.
