MANILA, Philippines - A week before the May 10 elections, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is bracing for more intense political rivalry, particularly in the provinces, which might lead to violence.

This, as several incidents and complaints of political harassment are being reported in different parts of the country.

PNP chief Director General Jesus Verzosa directed regional, provincial and local police officials to beef up their security measures to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure violence-free elections.

Verzosa reiterated his order to policemen nationwide to initiate peace covenants among the candidates and seek assistance from religious groups and the community.

In Surigao del Norte, some 30 armed men fired at the house of Malimono town Mayor Teodoro Sinaca and harassed villagers midnight Friday.

Reports reaching Camp Crame said three people in Sinaca’s house were slightly wounded.

After the firefight, police found four magazines for M-16 rifles, several empty shells, and an upper hand guard for M-16 rifle.

In Cagayan, 10 alleged supporters of Mayor William Mamba of Tuao town were arrested for the fatal shooting of a campaign coordinator of Lakas-Kampi mayoral bet Larry Fausto Saturday.

Reports said the victim, Alfredo Gannaban, 47, was on his way to Barangay Taribubu, Tuao town to coordinate Fausto’s political meeting when he was attacked. – With Charlie Lagasca
