Ex-Batangas councilor slain in ambush

BATANGAS, Philippines – A 49-year-old former councilor of Balayan town was killed in an ambush yesterday morning, police said.

Chief Inspector Romeo Baleros, Balayan police chief, said businessman and former councilor Romeo Anzaldo was on his way to his farm on board his Toyota Innova when he was waylaid by two men and a woman in Barangay Caybunga, Balayan.

Police said Anzaldo was reportedly able to return fire and hit one of the male attackers.

Authorities were later able to track down the wounded suspect, Jerry Alday, at Our Lady Of Caysasay Hospital in Lemery town where he had apparently sought treatment for a bullet wound.

Alday was arrested together with his alleged accomplice, Richard Alvarez. The female suspect managed to elude arrest, police said.

Police have yet to determine the motive behind the ambush-slay of Anzaldo, who served as Balayan councilor from 2001 to 2007.

Police found empty shells from a caliber .45, caliber 9-mm and AK-47 rifle at the crime scene.
