Peru quake triggers small tsunami in Japan

TOKYO (AFP) - The powerful quake that rocked Peru triggered small tsunami waves all the way across the Pacific Ocean in Japan, the weather agency said Friday.

Successive waves going up to 20 centimeters (eight inches) struck the archipelago's Pacific coast, starting with the north, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The agency had issued a tsunami advisory for virtually all of the country's eastern coasts which stayed in effect for 12 hours before being lifted Friday afternoon.

The massive 8.0-magnitude quake rocked Peru's southern coast, killing some 500, injuring hundreds more and leaving many feared trapped in the rubble.
