Warm weather increases incidence of sore eyes in La Union
Dr. Godofredo Rilloraza Jr., the city health officer, told The STAR that 87 individuals were affected with sore eyes this month, but only 25 cases were recorded last month.
“It’s unusual because it (sore eyes) usually occurs during summer. However, although it is already rainy season, we are still experiencing warm weather because of the drought, especially during the day. So watch out and be cautious,” Rilloraza said.
He added that since last week, their office has recorded at least five to six cases daily. Sore eyes, however, is an all-year-round disease and the common cause is improper hygiene.
“Those commonly affected with sore eyes are those with poor hygiene and once a person is affected, it is certain that other family members would be infected because it is highly infectious,” Rilloraza added.
“Proper hygiene is very important and they (patients) should avoid roaming around. Avoid exposure to sunlight and dusty areas. Any person who has close contact with them has strong chances of being affected,” Rilloraza added.
He warned patients not use any kind of liquid or eye drops to prevent damage on the eyes.
“Patients should better go for check up in their respective health centers where there are health workers who can provide them proper medical assistance,” he said.
