DAVAO CITY – The first correctional institute for women inmates in Mindanao will soon rise in Braulio Dujali, Davao del Norte.
Venancio Tesoro, superintendent of the Davao Penal and Prison Farm, said the new facility for women inmates will open on July 28 within the 6,000-hectare Juan Acenas sub-colony in Braulio Dujali town.
“Right now, we are just doing what is needed (for the) infrastructure and are making sure that it would be conducive for women inmates,” he said.
The new facility is expected to house at least 300 women inmates.
Tesoro said the idea of a correctional institute for women in Mindanao was raised when President Arroyo held a Cabinet meeting in Davao del Norte in 2001.
Tesoro said 10 percent of the more than 30,000 inmates all over the country are women.
