It’s a ‘free zone’ in ARMM after all

- Aurea Calica -
Not wanting to unduly interfere in the Aug. 8 polls in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Malacañang has opted to declare a "free zone" in the region, presidential political adviser Gabriel Claudio said yesterday.

In a "free zone," the ruling K-4 coalition will recognize all candidates running under the banner of political parties comprising it, said Claudio, senior deputy secretary general of Lakas-Christian, Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD).

"We are leaving the choice to the people of ARMM so that regional autonomy, as embodied in the Organic Act, can be achieved," he said.

Vying for governor are five Lakas-CMD members — incumbent Gov. Parouk Hussin and Vice Gov. Mahid Mutilan, Basilan Rep. Gerry Salapuddin, Mayor Zaldy Ampatuan of Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao and Regional Legislative Assembly Speaker Hatimil Hassan — and former Datu Paglas, Maguindanao mayor Ibrahim "Toto" Paglas, who is running under the Liberal Party.

Running for vice governor under Lakas are Assemblyman Ansaruddin Adiong, Farouk Macarambon and former Moro National Liberation Front commander Dimas Pundato.

Claudio said President Arroyo is pushing for the automation of the ARMM polls.

Meanwhile, Commission on Elections chairman Benjamin Abalos allayed fears over a possible surge in election-related violence in the ARMM. "The situation (there) is still calm and quiet up to this time," he said. — With Edith Regalado, Lino de la Cruz and Mayen Jaymalin
