Vice mayor survives ambush

CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao — The vice mayor of a hinterland town here survived an ambush by suspected Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels the other day.

The attack on Vice Mayor Antonio Gunsi of South Upi town, however, left his driver and one of his security men badly wounded, said Capt. Onting Alon, deputy civil-military relations chief of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division.

South Upi is the known haven of the Indigenous People’s Federal Army, a ragtag militia of Tiruray tribesmen claiming to be fighting for federal states each for Mindanao’s Muslim, Christian and tribal communities. — John Unson
