House to step into row over Clark mall project

The House of Representatives will step into the rift between the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) and Clark Development Corp. (CDC) over a planned shopping mall inside the Clark special economic zone in Pampanga.
Rep. Oscar Rodriguez (Lakas, Pampanga) said he would ask the appropriate committee to conduct hearings on the dispute between the two agencies and thereafter, delineate their powers and functions in a bill he intends to introduce with other Central Luzon congressmen.
He said he and his colleagues from the region would participate actively in the inquiry and in the enactment of the new law.
He said the interest of their constituents is at stake in the SM mall project, which he feared could go against the overall Clark development plan and could congest the main highway leading to the ecozone.
According to Rodriguez, the CDC has approved the mall project to be located near Clark’s Salakot entrance, the ecozone’s main gate, without consulting the BCDA.— Jess Diaz
