Campaigns of Cebu City rival blocs turning dirty

CEBU CITY — A worsening black propaganda and counter-propaganda offensive is seen in the offing between the camps of bitter political rivals Mayor Alvin Garcia and former mayor Tomas Osmeña.

Barangay officials supporting Garcia’s candidacy are now making counterattacks.

They are retaliating by distributing copies of a photo showing vice mayoralty aspirant Michael Rama and re-electionist councilor Jocelyn Pesquera in an apparent intimate moment.

Both Rama and Pesquera are running under the Bando Osmeña-Pundok Kauswagan party and have been rumored to be having an intimate relationship since last year.

A barangay chairman said he distributed the flyers Thursday afternoon inside the mayor’s office so that the people of Cebu City will know about Rama’s marital problem.

Earlier, Rama’s wife filed a petition for annulment of their marriage. The flyers, labeled "Love Team," are actually enlarged photocopies of a Sun-Star newspaper photo.

He said the mayor was already informed about their counter-move since they presented the flyers to him before they were distributed. "The mayor already knew about our plan and has even seen the flyers. He also showed to us in his office the photo which was published in the newspaper," the barangay head said in the vernacular.

The barangay officials said they are just retaliating after BO-PK standard bearer Tomas Osmeña circulated copies of the list of cases Garcia had faced and is facing at the Office of the Ombudsman.

Pesquera, for her part, said that if the mayor has no hand in the circulation of the flyers, he should stop it if he thinks it is wrong.

"It is hitting below the belt. He should tell his people to stop it if he thinks it is not good," Pesquera said. Freeman News Service
