Stronger PNP cybercrime response sought

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police stations should strengthen their response to cybercrimes, according to PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.
Welcoming the National Police Commission (Napolcom)’s plan to reform criminology education and police training, Nartatez said officers must be competent to “respond to cybercrimes, protect digital evidence and ensure that victims receive the assistance and justice they deserve.”
Nartatez has ordered an assessment of cybercrime training needs across police units.
Commanders are directed to strengthen frontline capabilities by promoting basic cybercrime awareness and response training among police officers receiving complaints from the public.
During the first Philippine Cybercriminology Summit, Napolcom Commissioner Rafael Vicente Calinisan said they would pursue reforms in criminology education, police training programs and the Philippine National Police Academy curriculum.
