Fisheries output grows 2 percent in Q2

MANILA, Philippines — The country’s fisheries production expanded to more than a million metric tons (MT) in the second quarter amid stronger output from the marine and municipal fishing subsectors, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

In a report, the PSA said fish output increased by two percent to 1.03 million MT in the April to June period from 1.01 million MT the previous year.

The growth in fish production in the second quarter was a reversal of the 2.4 percent contraction logged in the same period in 2025.

Increases in production were reported in the commercial fisheries, marine municipal fisheries and inland municipal fisheries subsectors.

On the other hand, the aquaculture subsector recorded an annual decline during the three-month period.

Aquaculture farms produced 460,930 MT of fish during the April to June period, declining by 4.7 percent from the 483,920 MT the same period last year.

The aquaculture subsector accounted for the highest share in fisheries production at 44.9 percent during the second quarter.

The volume of fish produced by the commercial fisheries sector reached 272,870 MT, slightly higher than the 270,920 MT produced during the same period last year. The subsector made up 26.6 percent of total production.

Of the 21 major species in the country, the PSA said that annual production growth was logged in round scad (galunggong) at 38 percent, followed by tilapia at 13.1 percent and squid at 42.2 percent.

On the other hand, production declines were mainly seen in seaweed at 3.3 percent, skipjack (gulyasan) at 14 percent, milkfish (bangus) at 7.1 percent, and big-eyed scad (matangbaka) at 11.5 percent.
