AFP denies rift with Gibo

MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces of the Philippines yesterday dismissed reports about a brewing rift between Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. and the AFP.
The insinuations surfaced last week after a complaint for perjury was filed before the Pasay prosecutor’s office, seeking a probe into Teodoro’s citizenship.
The complainants’ lawyer, Russel Miraflor, claimed that some active AFP generals “promised” that they would file cases against Teodoro over his Maltese citizenship, which the defense chief obtained in 2016 and renounced in 2021.
“That’s a joke that should be laughed at and not replied to,” Roy Vincent Trinidad, AFP spokesman for the West Philippine Sea, said at a press briefing.
Last week, Defense Assistant Secretary Erik Dy said the complaint filed against Teodoro “appears to be built on unverified allegations.”
“A complaint for perjury requires competent evidence, not speculation, assumption or a fishing expedition in search of proof. Until credible and verified evidence is presented, these claims remain nothing but unproven accusations,” Dy said.
