BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has retired nine of its drug-sniffing dogs and is looking for families willing to adopt the canines.

Up for adoption are five Belgian Malinois, three Jack Russell Terriers and a Labrador, which are abot 12 years old on average, according to PDEA chief Isagani Nerez.

The dogs had been tapped in various security operations including baggage and cargo inspections at airports, seaports and transport terminals as well as in search and rescue during disasters.

Nerez said the dogs played an important role in the agency’s campaign against illegal drugs.

“These canines have been loyal partners in our mission against illegal drugs. They deserve a safe and loving home,” Nerez said.

He said the PDEA’s K-9 facility is not the best environment for aging dogs.

Interested parties will undergo screening and interview before they will be matched with a dog.

Nerez said the PDEA would keep on monitoring the dogs to ensure that they are healthy and well-taken cared of in their new homes.
