'Domeng' now a typhoon

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical cyclone Domeng (international name: Jangmi) has intensified into a typhoon while posing no immediate land threat, state weather bureau PAGASA said on Saturday, May 30.
In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said the center of Domeng was spotted 815 kilometers east of Northern Luzon.
It was packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph, with a central pressure of 975 hPa.
The typhoon was moving northwestward at 20 kph, with strong to typhoon-force winds extending outward up to 500 kilometers from the center.
Strong winds, rains. PAGASA said Domeng will enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing strong to gale-force gusts over several areas:
- Saturday, May 30: Most of Visayas, Batanes, Cagayan, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol Region, Zamboanga del Norte, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Sarangani, Davao Occidental and Davao Oriental.
- Sunday, May 31: Most of Visayas, Batanes, Cagayan, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol Region, Zamboanga del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Agusan del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Sarangani, Davao Occidental and Davao Oriental.
- Monday, June 1: Most of Visayas, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol Region, Camiguin, Dinagat Islands, Davao Occidental and Davao Oriental.
Similar wind and rain conditions are expected to persist on Sunday, May 31, and Monday, June 1, across much of Luzon, Visayas and parts of Mindanao.
PAGASA also warned of possible heavy rainfall due to the enhanced southwest monsoon.
Sea conditions. Rough seas of up to 3.5 meters are expected along the seaboard of Batanes, while waves of up to 3 meters may affect Babuyan Islands and northern Luzon coastal waters.
Moderate seas are also expected over several seaboards in Luzon and the Visayas, including parts of Aurora, Quezon, Catanduanes, Northern Samar and Eastern Samar.
PAGASA warned small seacraft operators, including motorbanca users, not to venture out to sea under rough conditions.
Track, intensity. Domeng is expected to continue moving northwestward until Sunday before recurving toward southern Japan for the remainder of the forecast period.
It is unlikely to make landfall in the Philippines and is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Monday, June 1.
The typhoon is expected to further intensify and may reach peak strength over the Philippine Sea before gradually weakening as it moves away from the country.
