NBP pulls out 12 golf carts

MANILA, Philippines - The New Bilibid Prison (NBP) has pulled out 12 golf carts used as utility vehicles, ambulances and patrol cars in the maximum security compound, an official said yesterday.

NBP officer-in-charge Superintendent Celso Bravo told The STAR that the golf carts, given by relatives of ailing inmates, will be returned to the donors who show proof of ownership.

“At least one golf cart was claimed by its owner,” he said.

Bravo said the use of the golf carts started during the term of former Bureau of Corrections director Gaudencio Pangilinan in 2012.

He said the NBP decided to pull out the golf carts because of the negative publicity they generated.

“Patients needing medical attention will be carried manually from the dormitories inside the maximum security compound,” he said.

He added that electronic bicycles, also given by inmates’ relatives, will no longer be allowed in the compound.
