Narvasa laid to rest

MANILA, Philippines - Retired chief justice Andres Narvasa was laid to rest yesterday.

The late Supreme Court chief, who passed away last Oct. 31 due to a lingering illness, was given full honors by the Philippine National Police as his cremated ashes was inurned.

The urn was interred at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Shrine Parish Church in New Manila, Quezon City.

Earlier this week, the legal luminary dubbed the “Gray Dean” was accorded full honors by the Supreme Court and his alma matter, the University of Sto. Tomas Faculty of Civil Law.

He was remembered by retired chief justice Hilario Davide Jr. and incumbent Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno as an “intellectual heavyweight and incorruptible” and “a truly great man with humility, generosity and legacy on judicial reforms.”

Narvasa was appointed as a member of the high court on April 10, 1986 by the late former President Corazon Aquino before serving as 19th chief justice from Dec. 8, 1991 until his retirement from the judiciary on Nov. 30, 1998.

He had served under the administrations of former Presidents Aquino, Fidel Ramos and Joseph Estrada.
