Brave cop gets medal, promotion

MANILA, Philippines - A Marikina City policeman who was shot and wounded for fighting off robbers last Sunday received a medal and spot promotion yesterday for his bravery.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Alan Purisima handed over the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting (Wounded Personnel Medal) to Police Officer 2 Jason Villanueva at the St. Vincent Hospital in Marikina.

“Once again, the PNP has proven that it has a deep reserve of heroes within its ranks—heroes who unconditionally risk life and limb to give the people the best public service it deserves,” Purisima said.

Purisima also promoted Villanueva to the next higher rank.

“There will always be police officers who will stand out to deliver the message to the public that the PNP has a lot of good stories to tell,” Purisima said.

Villanueva was shot in an encounter with two armed suspects in Barangay Tumana, Marikina last Feb. 24.
