MANILA, Philippines - A police officer shot a freelance travel agent during a heated altercation in Ermita, Manila Friday afternoon.
Juancho Zambrano, 45, suffered several gunshot wounds and was brought to the Manila Doctors Hospital by Police Officer 2 Jovy Guiao, the same person who shot him, according to sources at the Manila Police District (MPD) General Assignment Section (GAS).
Guiao, who is assigned at the MPD Station 5 in Ermita, told The STAR he had an altercation with Zambrano, who was in his car, at the corner of Arquiza and Grey streets. He refused to say what caused the altercation.
He said Zambrano, while shouting at him, got out of the car and apparently tried to pull something out of the trunk. Guiao said he introduced himself as a policeman and told Zambrano to yield.
Guiao said Zambrano refused, so he was forced to fire his gun. He said he rushed Zambrano to the hospital and later surrendered himself to his colleagues, who brought him to GAS.
Sources said Guiao was not in uniform when the incident happened. Poll rules state that police officers can only carry a gun when they are in uniform.
