2 inmates to walk out of NBP

MANILA, Philippines - Two more elderly inmates are set to walk out of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City as free men after being granted executive clemency last week, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said yesterday.

This is the first time President Aquino granted executive clemency to NBP inmates during the Christmas season.

The DOJ said convicted murderer Arsenio Flores, 72, and Francisco Alimpos, 73, who is serving time for possession of illegal drugs, qualified for conditional parole after Aquino approved the commutation of their sentences.

The DOJ earlier announced that eight other inmates were released from NBP. Six of them were ageing inmates who were granted conditional pardon: Agustin Caballero, 71; Nicanor Medel, 72; Clarita Miranda, 71; Pablito Estrada, 73; Felipe Gahit, 72; and Venerando Generalo, 83.

Two other elderly inmates were also released on the same day after they were granted commutation of sentence: Aurelio Amolong, 85, and Celerino Sanchez, 82.
