QC holds race to promote drug-free city

MANILA, Philippines - Thousands of students flocked to the Quezon Memorial Circle yesterday to take part in the activities organized by the city government in a bid to boost the city’s campaign against illegal drugs.

Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte, head of the city’s anti-drug advisory council, graced the event, which lined up a series of activities, including the “Amazing Race.” She also led the students in taking a pledge to be an advocate against illegal drugs.

Belmonte said the event was part of the city’s campaign against illegal drug abuse and trafficking.

“Quezon City is strong and healthy because we are not drug addicts,” she said.

 “Are we going to let drugs destroy our society?” she added, referring to recent murder cases that were apparently caused by the use of illegal drugs.

Belmonte said the city recently launched an “Infoboard” that will allow residents to send information to authorities about incidents of illegal drug trade. She encouraged the students to use this program to help law enforcement agents curb illegal drug abuse.
