MANILA, Philippines - A Quezon City councilor has authored a resolution urging the city’s engineering department to repair all the open manholes in the city.
“Open manholes can cause accidents if not repaired immediately. It will cause much trouble to people and commuters when heavy rain falls unexpectedly,” Councilor Dorothy Delarmente said.
Other city councilors are supporting the resolution.
Delarmente said the move may lessen accidents that happen because of open manholes. “It should always be closed, not only for those doing simple walking, but also for motorists, to lessen vehicular accidents especially at night or if there is a typhoon. Through this, we are teaching irresponsible people who dump their garbage in open manholes a lesson,” she said.
She added that repairing manholes would be a “big help” in preventing floods caused by heavy rains.
