MANILA, Philippines - A security guard shot dead an unidentified robber who attacked him in the Manila International Container Terminal complex in North Harbor, Manila yesterday.
Rene Bongaitan, 45, a security guard of RW Security System, Inc., was doing his rounds when he saw the robber carrying a bundle of reefer wire worth P18,000 at around 1:50 a.m., according to Senior Police Officer 2 Glenzor Vallejo.
When Bongaitan tried to stop the robber, the latter dropped his loot, pulled out a knife and stabbed him. The guard fell, but drew his revolver and fired warning shots while still sprawled on the floor.
“Sensing that the guard was not going to harm him, the suspect continued his attack, leaving the former without a choice but to defend himself,” Vallejo said.
Though wounded, Bongaitan called up his office and asked his fellow guard, Arnulfo Vistar, to help him. Together, they rushed the robber to the Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, but he was declared dead on arrival from a gunshot wound in the stomach.
After receiving medical treatment, Boangitan surrendered to the Del Pan community precinct.
