PNP steps up 'Simbang Gabi' security

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome yesterday ordered all police units to enhance police visibility to ensure the safety and security of church goers attending the traditional Misa de Gallo.

Bartolome toured several Metro Manila churches on the first day of the traditional nine-day Masses on Friday to assess the implementation of the PNP’s Police Integrated Patrol System (PIPS) around church areas.

Bartolome has instructed all police regional directors to redirect PIPS operations to maximize police visibility around churches.

The PNP chief also ordered police commanders to deploy patrol cars with blinkers to visibly establish police presence. He said a police car with blinkers has been proven effective as a crime deterrent.

Meanwhile, Bartolome reminded local police units to watch out for common street crimes such as robbery, theft, burglaries of unattended houses, swindling and street gang wars.

PNP spokesman, Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr., yesterday said members of the PNP Command Group and Directorial Staff would be conducting surprise inspections to determine the compliance of field units.

He said police, military and civilian firearms owners should not fire their guns as a form of merry-making.

“The Chief PNP directed all regional Directors and National Support Unit Commanders to conduct the traditional taping of gun muzzles of all issued firearms immediately after Christmas Day to reinforce the law,” Cruz said.
