Gov't OKs FPIC oil recovery plan

- Sheila Crisostomo -

MANILA, Philippines - The Inter-Agency Committee on Environmental Health (IACEH) has approved a system proposed by the First Philippine Industrial Corp. (FPCI) for the recovery and treatment of the oil that leaked from its pipeline in Barangay Bangkal, Makati City.

In an Oct. 14 resolution signed by Health Secretary and IACEH chairman Enrique Ona, the committee certified that the Multiphase Extraction (MPE) technology the FPIC wants to use for its remediation efforts passed the environmental technology verification of the Department of Science and Technology’s Industrial Technology Development Institute.

The resolution states that the technology meets the standards set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency on the remediation of contaminated sites. FPIC president Tony Mabasa expressed elation over the approval.
