MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has inked an agreement with a leading chemical industry in the country and the Las Piñas City government to save the 1.7-kilometer stretch of the Manarigo River.
Apart from Rohm and Haas Philippines Inc. and the Las Piñas city government, other signatories were the non-government organization Sagip Ilog Foundation and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP).
DENR Secretary Ramon Paje said the agreement calls for the improvement of the water quality and the environment of the Manarigo River by establishing materials recovery systems in barangays, educating residents and stakeholders, and by going against violators of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act and the Clean Water Act.
“Also under the agreement, Rohm and Haas shall provide the funding in the amount of P1.4 million as donation to PBSP for the general implementation of project and shall participate in any volunteer works during the project,” he said.
To date, the DENR chief said more than 230 agreements to clean up waterways all over the country have been signed.
