MANILA, Philippines - The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) wanted students in Metro Manila to carry whistles to deter criminals.
NCRPO chief Director Roberto Rosales emphasized that a whistle is inexpensive – it costs P5 to P10 – but has been proven effective in “saving a lot of lives.”
“All the students would do when they witness a crime is to blow the whistle and everybody’s attention, like policemen, barangay officials, bystanders and fellow students, would be attracted by its sound,” said Rosales.
Rosales noted that the initial reaction of criminals hearing the sound of a whistle would not to push through with the illegal activity and instead turn and run to escape.
“Our policemen and barangay officials would surely be very willing to respond to any sound of a whistle,” Rosales said.
Rosales wants to air his suggestion during his meeting today with officers and members of the Manila Security Supervisors and Operators (MASSO), who are responsible for securing colleges and universities in Metro Manila.
In the meeting, Rosales would also be distributing “Be Safe, Be Smart, Don’t Be the Next Victim” posters and stickers, which carries tips on how students should handle themselves to prevent being victimized by criminals.
The NCRPO advises students to beware of suspicious- looking individuals; have emergency numbers on hand; shout or scream to attract the attention of others; vary their movements to avoid detection; avoid dimly lit streets and alleys; report crime immediately; and be smart and vigilant.
