MANILA, Philippines - A pedestrian was killed and three passengers were hurt in two separate road accidents involving buses in southern Metro Manila Monday night.
Efren Langrio, 61, died after he was hit by an Elena bus (TXF-971) as he was crossing the Roxas Boulevard-EDSA intersection at around 11 p.m.
Witnesses alleged that bus driver Sonny Bogayan, 25, was racing with another bus driver when the accident happened. Bogayan, who denied the allegation, said Langrio suddenly crossed the road.
Passersby rushed Langrio to the Pasay City General Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Senior Police Officer 1 Alberto Ignacio said Bogayan was brought to the police station for investigation.
Two hours later, three passengers were hurt when a Don Mariano bus (PVF-642) slammed into a concrete barrier along Macapagal Avenue in Parañaque City and turned on its side at around 12:45 a.m.
Senior Police Officer 1 Alipio Dimaano identified the victims as Leyda Epistola, 31; Ramil Sunin, 39; and Kevin Edward Amora, 29. They were brought to the San Juan de Dios Hospital for treatment of the bruises and fractures they sustained.
Bus driver Angelito Adobo, 32, told police officers he was sleepy and was not able to step on the brakes in time to stop the bus from hitting the barrier.
