2 nabbed for attempt to con cell phone outlet

MANILA, Philippines - Two persons were arrested yesterday for allegedly trying to defraud a Globe Telecoms outlet at the SM North EDSA mall complex in Quezon City.

Arrested were Richard Carino, 28, a resident of Barangay Ibaba; and Jennifer Rivera, 31, single, a resident of Barangay Concepcion, both in Malabon City. Both are jobless.

Investigation showed that at 2 p.m. last Feb. 10, Carno appeared at the Globe Telecoms Business Store at the SM City Annex and applied for a Globe Plan P1,200.

Store clerks said Carino introduced himself as Jayson Diaz Moreno and submitted the required documents. The plan he applied for was approved and released last Feb. 28 and he received a Nokia 6303 worth around P12,000.

On the same day, Carino, together with Rivera, made another try at taking out another promo plan. Rivera introduced herself as Mae Lozano. The duo applied for Plan P500 and P800, respectively.

Retail store manager Joan Chanco, however, recognized Carino, and initiated credit investigations.

On March 3, Chanco received confirmation from the agency that the papers presented by the two suspects were fake.

The suspects were arrested when they showed up yesterday to claim the cell phones they applied for under the promo plans.    – Jerry Botial
