Man takes grandkids hostage over ‘pan de sal’

A 38-year-old man held four of his grandchildren hostage after an argument over pan de sal, a type of bread that is a Filipino breakfast staple, in Parañaque City yesterday.

Without making any clear demands, Antonio Cedano of San Antonio Valley 8 held his grandchildren at knifepoint and threatened to hurt them.

Parañaque City police chief Superintendent Ronald Estilles said a 13-inch kitchen knife was seized from Cedano after he surrendered.

Estilles said Cedano appeared to be under the influence of illegal drugs.

Cedano’s niece told social worker Kristian Buhay that she does not know why her uncle threatened to hurt her children.

Police Officers 1 Percival Carillo, Adrian Valencia and PO2 Armando Orticio, as arresting officers, brought Cedano to the nearest police station, where he is now detained.

Cedano’s grandchildren will be brought to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) where they will be subjected to counseling in order to counter the trauma they may have suffered as a result of the incident.       – Michael Punongbayan
