141 aliens barred from entering country
A total of 141 illegal and undesirable aliens were barred from entering the country through the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in the last two months, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) announced yesterday.
Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan said this figure only proves that the bureau has been effective in its strict monitoring of alien passengers arriving at the country’s premier airport through its new Migration Compliance and Monitoring Group (MCMG).
The figure covers flights at both NAIA terminals I and II from June 16 to Aug. 15,
“I would like to assure our people that the immigration bureau under my watch will always observe utmost vigilance to ensure that foreigners who visit our country will not be a burden to our society or pose threats to our national security and public safety,” he said in a statement.
Libanan said all excluded aliens have already been placed in the bureau’s blacklist and are now banned from re-entering the country.
MCMG head Clodualdo Penera revealed that most of the banned foreign passengers were profiled as possible public charges, or those who are incapable of supporting their stay here.
There were also aliens who were excluded after their names were found in the bureau’s blacklist, while others had no entry visas or return tickets.
He also said foreigners who could not clearly explain to immigration officers the purpose of their visit are often prevented from leaving the airport and instead sent back to their country of origin. He said there are some cases when aliens could not even name the hotel or place where they intend to stay.
