Malabon City Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) fire marshal Rodrigo Reyes said the blaze gutted a residential-commercial building at the corner of L.Gutierrez and Flores streets in Barangay Hulong Duhat at around 7:30 a.m.
No one was reported hurt in the incident.
The fire of still unknown origin started at the second floor and engulfed a room occupied by one Blanquita Bonson.
The blaze quickly spread and razed the upper portion of the two-story structure, which was made of wood and other light materials.
At least six units on the first floor, including the Agua Lab water refilling station owned by one Teresita Pamaran Bongon, was damaged.
Firefighters controlled the blaze at around 8:35 a.m. The blaze reached Task Force Alpha before firemen declared it out at around 9:10 a.m.
Arson investigators have yet to determine the cause of the blaze.
In Navotas, Mayor Tobby Tiangco called on residents to work with the municipal government and the local BFP in the observance of the fire prevention month, which starts tomorrow.
Tiangco directed fire marshal Edgardo Antonio, the Public Information Office, Barangay Councils, Barangay Operation Centers and other concerned agencies to work closely with other sectors in fostering awareness and educate residents on how to avoid fire and what to do when one occurs.
The mayor also ordered the Business Permits and Licensing Office to ensure that all registered establishments in the municipality are equipped with fire fighting tools.
