Army captain shot dead

An Army captain was shot dead yesterday inside the Philippine Army headquarters at Fort Bonifacio by one of his men, whom the former berated for not being at his post. After shooting his superior, the suspect turned his weapon on himself.

Capt. Eduardo Madiclum Jr. died on the spot from multiple gunshot wounds in the body while Army Sgt. Leonilo Broso died at the Army hospital from a lone gunshot wound in the head.

Army officials said the shooting that occurred inside the Howitzer and Battery Barracks of the Security and Escort Battalion was not in any way connected to any coup plots against the government.

Army spokesman Maj. Bartolome Bacarro said the shooting happened at about 9 a.m. after Madiclum reprimanded Broso for being absent at his post the previous night.

Broso reportedly emptied the 20-round load of his M-16 rifle on his superior.

He then turned rifle on himself.

Soldiers rushed Madiclum to the Army hospital, where he lapsed into a three-hour coma before expiring.

"Problemado yong sundalo,"
Bacarro could only say when asked what motive triggered the incident.
