13,400 school kids seek toothbrushing record

The Philippines attempts to enter the Guinness Book of World Records anew when some 13,400 children take part in a toothbrushing drill at Rizal Park in Manila today.

In a statement, the Department of Education (DepEd) said elementary school pupils from eight selected schools in Manila will join the "Mega Toothbrushing Drill" at 9 a.m. in an attempt to beat the record for the "largest one-time toothbrushing activity."

The record is held by China, which assembled some 10,240 students in the activity.

Today’s event, made possible by the Health and Nutrition Center, Colgate Palmolive Philippines Inc. and the Philippine Dental Association (PDA), aims to boost DepEd’s effort in promoting the importance of brushing in the prevention of tooth decay.

To give impact to National Dental Health Month in February, school dentists, in coordination with the local PDA chapters, will also conduct free dental services and oral health education to students, teachers and non-teaching staff of public schools nationwide. 

The theme chosen for this year is "Ngiping Alaga Mula sa Pagkabata, Sandata Natin sa Pagtanda."

Dental services section chief Juan Araojo said they are also set to launch the "Bright Smiles, Bright Futures" poster-making contest open to Grade 1 to Grade 3  pupils all over the county. – Sandy Araneta
