EDSA mishap: 14 hurt

Fourteen people were hurt yesterday morning when a public utility bus (PUB) rammed into a private vehicle on EDSA in Makati City.

Senior Police Officer 4 Oscar Alicando, traffic investigator, said most of the 12 bus passengers and two occupants of a silver Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (XNU-833) were taken to the Ospital ng Makati for treatment.

"None of the 14 were reported to be in critical condition,"  Alicando said.

Among those confined in the hospital are Danny Boy Avila, 25, who was driving the Prado and his lone passenger, Reniza Danza, 24, a housemaid.

Police said charges of reckless imprudence resulting to damage to property and multiple injuries would be lodged against the FG Bus Lines driver Rolando Tagui, 25, of Barangay Tunasan, Muntinlupa City.

"It appeared to be the bus driver’s fault because he was reportedly trying to beat the red light that resulted in the collision," Alicando said.

Initial investigation showed that at 7:05 am., the bus (PYA-313), which was traveling from Guadalupe to Alabang, allegedly tried to beat a red light at the intersection of EDSA and Ayala Avenue.

Tagui did not see the Prado coming from Ayala Avenue headed toward McKinley Road. The front end of the bus hit the left side of the private vehicle.

In Manadaluyong City, a 17-year-old female student died while her neighbor was critically injured when they were sideswiped by a speeding luxury van on Shaw Boulevard over the weekend.

Marie Kris Salvador, a resident of San Juan, sustained massive head and body injuries and died while being treated at the New Medical City Hospital.

Her neighbor Jefferson Metran, 18, suffered injuries and is being treated at the same hospital.

Prober SPO3 Eduardo Aberia said the two students were crossing Shaw Boulevard when they were hit by a speeding maroon Honda CRV.

Instead of stopping, the driver stepped on the gas and headed toward the EDSA-Shaw fly-over.

A tow truck crew rushed the victims to the hospital, where Salvador died an hour later. – With Non Alquitran
