MWSS officials who requested anonymity said the ongoing public hearings will play a vital role in fixing the rate hike it would grant the two Metro Manila water concessionaries.
"We will take the current situation in consideration, especially now that the issue is very sensitive," said the source. But the officials clarified that they are not under pressure from Malacañang since the Palace statement was only confined to news reports. The informants said the MWSS never received any communication from Malacañang to temper the water rates.
A compromise MWSS is reportedly considering is to impose the hike on a staggered basis to cushion its effect on the public. The MWSS last year allowed the water concessionaries the same staggered scheme in adjusting their rate due to the peso’s depreciation.
Maynilad Water is reportedly seeking to adjust its rates to P30 per cubic meter while Manila Water wants it to be P25.
