With its theme "Maynila, Mahal Kita," Atienza said the celebration would symbolize the "happiness and pride that Manileños feel in their hearts as a result of the positive changes, which were introduced by the Buhayin ang Maynila program." "We made sure that this years Araw ng Maynila celebration would be very lively and colorful, one that would bring joy to the people," Atienza explained.
The mayor noted that Manila would have a carnival atmosphere during the week-long celebration, as he invited the public to participate in the festivities.
As a starter on June 15, the Star Search 2002 Grand Finals will be held at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium and would feature performances by the winning talents from various barangays in Manila.
On June 20, a testimonial luncheon will be held at the Bulwagan Antonio Villegas at the Manila City Hall to honor the citys outstanding taxpayers. Outstanding Filipino artists will also be honored the same day.
A food festival will be held along the seawall from June 21 to 24. Food and beverage establishments will put up booths in the area.
The Calician Cruciero Monument would be inaugurated at around 8:30 a.m. on June 23. The monument is located beside the building of the Bureau of Immigration.
On the same day, the 23rd Manila Jockey Clubs Grand Copa de Manila horse races will be held at 4 p.m. at the San Lazaro Hippodrome.
Atienza will lead city officials and residents in inaugurating the redeveloped Plaza Rajah Sulayman on June 24. A street party will be held at the plaza with fireworks display and free concert by River Maya as the main attractions.
