3 Talisay gov't workers test positive for drugs

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  At least three Talisay City Hall employees were found to have traces of methamphetamine hydrochloride or more popularly known as "shabu" in their urine samples in a random drug test conducted Monday.

Once confirmed, they will be suspended from their jobs, according to City Administrator John Yre de los Reyes.

De los Reyes yesterday said only three of the 32 employees who underwent the drug exam tested positive.

De los Reyes said the three regular employees will be recommended for suspension before the mayor and will have to undergo drug rehabilitation.

However, he refused to name the three employees and departments they belong.

Under Article 36 (d) of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, officers and employees of public and private offices, whether domestic or overseas, shall be subjected to undergo a random drug test as contained in the company's work rules and regulations, which shall be borne by the employer, for purposes of reducing the risk in the workplace.

De los Reyes said any officer or employee found positive for use of dangerous drugs shall be dealt with administratively, which shall be a ground for suspension or termination, subject to the provisions of Article 282 of the Labor Code and pertinent provisions of the Civil Service Law.  (FREEMAN)
