P18M for closure of dump site

Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  The Lapu-Lapu City council has allocated P18 million to finance the full closure of the dump site in barangay Mactan.

The dump site in Mactan has been closed for several years now but there are requirements set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources that are to be met for its complete closure.

The supplemental budget, which was approved by the city council last week, includes the P18 million appropriation.

Vice Mayor Marcial Ycong and members of the city council said the money will be spent for the installation of vent pipes and a containment pond.

The Environmental and Management Section said the undertakings will reduce health and environmental impacts and would protect the air and water in the city.

The city government will also construct a leachate treatment plant for P2.3 million.

When the dump site is finally closed, the city government will construct a Material Recovery Facility nearby.  (FREEMAN)
