CEBU, Philippines - The Mandaue City government is urging households to build their own compost pits.
Engr. Ricardo Mendoza, the chief of the Barangay Solid Waste Board, said there is now a need for every household to put up their own compost pits in order to lessen the volume of the city’s garbage.
Mendoza said the idea came up after the city found out some barangays have difficulty collecting garbage from areas that have narrow roads. When garbage trucks can’t penetrate these areas, garbage is strewn just about anywhere.
Some of the uncollected garbage ends up in drainage systems.
He said composting in now being adopted by barangays Ibabao, Casili, Tabok, and Paknaan.
Private firms are also being urged to put up their own material recovery facility (MRF). – (FREEMAN)
