CEBU, Philippines - Ten classrooms of the Mandaue City Comprehensive High School have been declared unsafe for use and students now hold classes in tents and in the school’s gymnasium.
Benjamin Tiongzon, the administrative officer of the Department of Education in Mandaue City, said yesterday the Office of the Building Official (OBO) has inspected the school buildings after the earthquake last Monday and declared these unsafe for use.
Tiongzon said the main wooden building was built in 1986 yet and is already infested by termites. It sways when big vehicles pass by, he said.
Tiongzon said the city government is negotiating with the Aboitiz Foundation for the construction of new classrooms.
The Aboitiz Foundation helps local government units and the Department of Education construct classrooms. - THE FREEMAN
