Girl dies after "holding breath"

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - A fourth year graduating student of the Marigondon National High School died for allegedly holding her breath after being scolded by her mother last Tuesday evening.

Ramigen Garcia was declared dead at the Mactan District Hospital.

Her mother, Juanita Garcia, alleged she scolded her daughter for coming home late from school last Tuesday, and the girl, who may have resented the scolding, held her breath.

Since the girl allegedly had a history in difficulty in breathing, suddenly could not resume breathing when she wanted to, the mother said.

The mother said the girl was already unconscious when she tried to give her a drink of water.

PO1 Junard Cinco of the Homicide section of the Lapu-Lapu City Police office suggested that the girl be autopsied but the mother declined because she was convinced no foul play was involved. – (FREEMAN)
