Mindanao LPA dissipates

Romina Cabrera - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The low-pressure area in Mindanao dissipated yesterday, but rains will continue in other areas, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Scattered rains are forecast in Aurora and Quezon due to the easterlies.

Bicol region, Eastern Visayas, Caraga and Davao region will experience isolated rains.

Localized thunderstorms may bring isolated rains in Metro Manila and the rest of the country.

PAGASA warned of possible flash floods or landslides during moderate and heavy rains.

Leptospirosis cases up

Meanwhile, leptospirosis cases have increased during the rainy season, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

As of June 15, there were 878 leptospirosis cases nationwide, with 84 deaths recorded.

Except for the Zamboanga peninsula and Northern Mindanao regions, all regions recorded an increase in leptospirosis cases over the previous month, the DOH noted.

“Avoid wading or playing in flood waters in order not to get sick with leptospirosis. If it can’t be helped, use rubber boots and wash your body with clean soap and water once you get home,” said Health Secretary Ted Herbosa.

He urged local government units to unclog drainage and implement rodent control measures. – Rhodina Villanueva
