Inspired by Paula’s Ibiza, Raffia and leather take on new form

Few places in the world at any point in time have become as synonymous with the countercultural movement as Paula’s Ibiza was in the 1970s. Opened by German-born Armin Heinemann in 1972, to this day it encapsulates Ibiza’s Edenic, bohemian spirit. Loewe’s British creative director Jonathan Anderson said, “Different generations have escaped here in a quest for personal freedom, making the identity of the place richly layered,” Anderson said. Every summer, he explores these layers in clothing, accessories, and, more recently, fragrances.

This summer, the smooth, buttery texture of leather that the house is known for takes a supporting role to the house’s signature weave and basketry. Puzzle and Puzzle Fold are given new life in woven raffia, with graphic stripes that follow the shape of the bag.

Looking for a beach bag? The Font tote and Iraca Basket come in new colors.

New accessories in leather come as tropical fruits, mixed raffia, and leather pouches inspired by animals, wallets, and charms.

During the Manila launch, Heart Evangelista, Anne Curtis, Bea Soriano Dee and Laureen Uy show up in archive scarf print dresses and shirts from the womenswear line. Crop tops mismatched with asymmetrically hemmed ruffle miniskirts sway with their every move. They all go with the eyewear of the season, the Sporty Mask crafted in acetate and distinctively wraparound.

Spotted on LA Aguinaldo and David Guison are hyper-colored prints by Douglas Abraham, all over oversized tops and baggy, West Coast-style shorts for men. The artist’s abstract dice, teddy bear and planet motifs also show up in T-shirts, sweatshirts and swimwear.

The collection’s footwear have an update on the classic espadrilles. For something more waterproof, there’s the foam slides with pebble detail in crystal and metallic effects.
