MANILA, Philippines – In a bid to wish you an impeccable year of style to come, YStyle greets you with a “Happy 2016” — 16 of the most notable trends to come fresh off the spring/summer runways.
The modern bomber
Utilitarian is having a moment — the longest of moments — and basking in the glory of post- apocalyptic trilogies. Although there’s nothing dystopian about Emilio Pucci’s take on the staple tomboy piece, adding a feminine twist with peek-a-boo lace and lightweight layers so you can save the world in style.
Spanish flair
Well, hello there, Miss Colombia. One of 2016’s biggest trends comes all the way from the Latin Americas. Flamenco skirts and red- hot hues with toreador-esque references rule the Universe — the runways, rather — at Proenza Schouler, Oscar de la Renta, Balmain, Michael Kors and Roberto Cavalli.
Cinched waist
Lucky for everyone who has been binge eat- ing for the past few weeks, there’s enough time to shed all that holiday weight. Cinching or paperbag waists are interpreted by 3.1 Phillip Lim, Tod’s and Public School for 2016. Slouchy or tailored, accessorize it with knots and bows for added flair.
Victorian era
Fashion’s love affair with period dressing makes a strong case once again for 2016. The delicate femininity combined with the rich history of the Victorian era serves as default inspiration amongst designers season after sea- son. High-collar necklines, ruffles and broderie anglaise will be very visible this coming year.
Bold baubles
The quirky, eccentric gal reigned supreme amid all the maximalist action on the spring/ summer 2016 runways, and there’s no better finishing touch to the profusion than a state- ment piece. It’s all about bringing attention to the face for accessorizing: in a nod to mod, these graphic spiral earrings by Vionnet complete an equally bold statement eye.
‘70s suede
Suede was the fabric de rigueur of 2015. From Zara to H&M, the decadent material that ruled the ‘70s and ‘90s dominated the racks of every fast fashion retailer last year. For 2016, it makes a strong comeback with a different proposition. The new reincarnation of suede comes in the form of kimonos at Jonathan Saunders, boxy jackets c/o Miuccia Prada and show-stopping dresses at Balmain.
Fishnet
It’s the trend that casts a wide net if you’re in the market for one wardrobe update come summertime. Unlike its retro club-rat predeces- sor, this season’s fishnet is executed in sportier, sleeker silhouettes. Alexander Wang does it in a tank top and bomber jacket while Dion Lee’s skirts and dress hems also give you more leg ventilation. This Port
Robe dressing
The lusciously languid prevalence of the slip dress for day to night has brought the lingerie out of the boudoir and into the street, but that is only the beginning. Think luxuriating in a warm terrycloth robe in the comforts of your favorite five-star hotel — but out at brunch or cocktails at a speakeasy. Thakoon made it look bohemian with contrast piping and ropes while Riccardo Tisci’s Givenchy makes it eveningwear-appropriate with lapels. All that supple silk and poplin is just too good for simply sleeping in, anyway.s 1961 look’s wide fishnets give texture to an otherwise minimalistic all- white number.
Futuristic metallics
For spring/summer 2016, silver takes first place as the choice metallic to take you back to the future, by way of the Space Age-loving ‘60s. Whether in intergalactic leathers at Cour- reges or a deluge of light-reflecting shards and silver fringing at Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe, it renders even the most basic shapes with maximum impact without the gaudy, look- at-me command of gold. Case in point: this number by Lacoste — doesn’t it remind you of a chic space suit?
Bold stripes
Ever the go-to print for a classic look, stripes have gone bigger, bolder and every which way this season. At Jonathan Saunders, horizontal stripes take the back seat and vertical stripes barely make an appearance, as swirly, irregular and contrasting combinations steal the show. No longer limited to nautical styles, stripes have possibly replaced florals in communicat- ing freshness and youth in fashion.
Dressed-up denim
Denim hits the spot — always. Whether it’s frayed, in patches or in undone hemlines, this true blue trend started to make waves once it was sent down the runway of Marques Al- meida’s collection. Typically a casual fabric, the trend is one that will carry over to 2016 with ease. Switch out your old pair of crisp denims for one that’s frayed especially for you.
Tie-dye
Spare yourself the floral prints and enter the world of tie-dye in all shades and textures. Altuzarra, Emilio Pucci and Thakoon show us how it’s done as they play around with earthy, pastel and vivid tones in an endless selection of silhouettes. A nod to ‘60s fashion, tie-dye brings to the forefront playful designs that don’t just stop with flowy dresses and peasant tops, but also make their debut in tough leather biker jackets care of Louis Vuitton.
Intercontinental
The “global village” as interpreted in fash- ion is a heady mix of references from different cultures and eras, woven together to form an arrestingly unique, sometimes controversial whole. At Junya Watanabe, African fabric patterns in bold hues are swathed on powder- white models, perhaps as a form of subversion, or maybe just to reflect how cultures have crossed over and survived — whatever it is, don’t call it “tribal.”
Geek chic
Alessandro Michele's agenda-setting col- lection for spring/summer 2016 elevated his signature vintage meets hi-shine aesthetic to new heights — evolving the new house codes to include a love for Lurex pussybow blouses and trompe l’oeil sequined embellishments. The look departed from all things minimal to a full-on embrace of a magpie aesthetic. Consider beginning your 2016 with the new Gucci house mien by embracing the quirky and all things ec- centric: a woman who marches to the beat of her own drum — with an embellished beret bien sur.
Attack of the clothes
2016 will awaken The Force on the runways with Oscar Isaac’s smolder and Daisy Ridley’s fashion campaign-ready looks — Rodarte’s Yoda, C3PO and Luke Skywalker printed silk faille gowns from fall/winter 2014 notwithstanding. With The Force Awakens, the costuming — be it scavenger Rey’s all-weather garb fit for a desert romp or Kylo Ren’s Rick Owens-meets-Yohji Yamamoto aesthetic — will potentially trickle down from the highest houses of haute couture to the high street. In 2016, we’re ready for more than just a Star Wars T-shirt collab.
Power sleeves
2016 calls for an ‘80s redux with puffed sleeves as seen on J.W. Anderson, Celine and Dior. Reminiscent of the wedding gown of the late Princess Diana, these statement sleeves can be worn with the same confidence and sass on the streets without the accompanying stares. Don’t be intimidated by the voluminous sleeves as they go so well with a tight fitted skirt or even worn on top of a simple dress.
